In today’s market, data is no longer limited to inventory or financials. To these traditional datasets, we have now added customer and vendor databases, transportation networks, media integration, code bases and forecasting/predictive modelling sets to name only a few. This ocean is what we now refer to as Big Data.

How well software is managed within a company is often a quick and decisive measure to understand if the company has a competitive advantage via accesses to information.

It has been said that ‘data is the fuel on which businesses run’. We disagree. Data is the map and Business Intelligence (BI) is the practice of plotting the course to our destination using that map. If the map is inaccurate, we can be pretty sure we won’t arrive at our destination, or, if we do, we will discover that it isn’t where we need to be after all.

Data Integration is often approached by simply dumping data from different enterprises in to a giant data warehouse. This approach not only seldom solves data problems, but often creates new ones as data from different sources is likely to contain redundancies, inaccuracies and just plain outdated information. Add to this challenges created by different file and media formats, different data sources and formats and often different purposes for the same data and Data Integration becomes much more complex than simply creating a data warehouse.

When data is measured in Terabytes, or the relationships between data sets are extremely complex, traditional visualization methods may limit even the most perceptive efforts to see patterns, manipulate data models and make projections.
